Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is so much associated with the World Rally Championships, and of course, to Tommi Makinen. The car brand gained so much fame in the WRC because of Tommi and the car itself. In anyway we look at it, the Evolution is definitely one of the best race cars ever invented. Lancer Evolution has received several awards worldwide. In Canada, the Evolution X is named as the Best Performance Car under $50K by Motoring 2009. It also won the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada 2009 Best New Technology Award and in 2008 earned IIHS Top Safety Pick. During 2009 New York International Auto Show Lancer Evolution X is Announced as one of the top 10 World Performance Car of the Year. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution won Automotive Excellence Awards 2008 "Fun to Drive" and It took Dave TV’s “2008 Sports Car of the Year” award.

The 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution won ConsumerSearch's best Aggressive sports sedan in Best Sports Sedans in June 2006. The car also received recognitions from Scotland, France, Greece, United States and Australia. Obviously, the most popular edition of Evolution is the Evolution VI. This edition already had an initial release but was revived in 1999 to pay tribute to the best Mitsubishi car driver, “Turbo” Tommi Makinen of Finland. He is the Finnish Rally Drive who won four Mitsubishi WRC Driver's Championship and also the reason why Mitsubishi received international mentions. With that achievement, he surely deserves this tribute. The Tommi Makinen Edition is very different from the original Evolution 6. This special edition, sometimes called as Evolution 6 ½, Evo 6.5 or TME, has a different bumper, Red/Black Recaro seats embossed with T. Makinen logo, 17" Enkei white wheels, a leather Momo steering wheel and shift knob, a titanium turbine that spooled up quicker, front upper strut brace, lowered ride height (with tarmac stages in mind), and a quicker steering ratio. You can buy it red, white, blue, black or silver with optional special decals that immitates Makinen's rally car color scheme.

The special features of the Evolution VI Tommi Makinen edition stands out compared to other Evolution being released. For the road performance, there is the high-response titanium turbocharger that gives better low-end and mid-range torque, using a smaller, shape-optimized compressor wheel. There is tarmac suspension that is tuned to give a better initial response on tarmac surfaces and a new muffler that uses a single large bore circular tailpipe for a more quiet performance. The exterior of the Evolution 6 also makes the difference. The front bumper features a new powerful design that improves aerodynamics and lowers air intake temperature to stabilize power output characteristics.

Its 17-inch alloy wheels shares the same design as on Mitsubishi's WRC Group-A works car. There is also a special coloring package that comprises WRC stripe, Ralliart decals, Mitsubishi 3-diamond decal on ends of rear spoiler, upper wing section of rear spoiler finished in white, rear panel garnish, body-keyed door sashes, amber front indicator lenses, door handles finished in black. On its interior design, you will find Recarro bucket seats that uses red fabric embroidered with Tommi Makinen logo. Its dashboard is finished in black with red lettering while MOMO steering wheel and gear stick knob and boot are trimmed in red-stitch leather.
